Do I Need a Stroller Fan: Yes or No?

by Abi Owen
Do I Need a Stroller Fan: Yes or No?

Being a parent means always prioritising safety and comfort for our babies - and stroller fans are a great addition to strollers to keep your baby cool in the summer months. But are they really necessary? Do they actually work?

Stroller fans easily attach to the frame of your pram and circulate cool air around your baby, keeping them cool when the weather gets hotter.

So today's blog, we will look into the benefits of stroller fans, when you may need a stroller fan and whether it's worth getting one for your pram.

When May You Need a Stroller Fan?

You may be wondering if a stroller fan is necessary and if you need a stroller fan… Let's take a look into some of the circumstances where a stroller fan may come in handy!

Hot Summer Months

During summer, when the heat is sticky and makes your baby uncomfortable, a stroller fan can help to cool your baby down so that they can relax on a walk along the beach, or sit in the shade.

Let’s not forget that holidays should be relaxing for parents too - so keeping your baby comfortable is key to keeping them happy!

Crowded Spaces

If you travel on busy trains a lot, or are running errands in busy city spaces, a stroller fan can help to circulate fresh air to your baby when the air in crowded spaces may be limited.

Crowded spaces can also be hot when everybody is packed close together (like on trains!). You can keep your baby cool in crowded spaces with a stroller fan.

Naptime

If your baby takes naps in their stroller when they are out and about, a stroller fan will provide your baby with a gentle breeze. This creates the perfect soothing environment for a nap!

How to Attach a Stroller Fan

Attachable fans are super easy to install in your pram - and most of them are universal, so they attach to the safety bar of most strollers.

Start by choosing the perfect spot for your fan, where your baby will get enough airflow without the fan being in the way of your view of them and their view on their adventures.

Securely tighten the fan onto the chosen place. Most fans come with clips or adjustable arms that can wrap around the bars tightly and securely.

So, follow these steps to attach your fan to your stroller:

  • Choose the right place to attach your fan
  • Securely tighten the fan using the clips or adjustable arms
  • Allow your little one to enjoy the breeze!

Benefits of a Stroller Fan

There are so many benefits to incorporating a fan into your travel system. Let's take a look:

Temperature Regulation

Keeping your baby at the right temperature is essential to make sure that they are comfortable. To avoid an upset and uncomfortable baby, incorporate a pram fan to keep your baby cool during hotter months.

This is also essential for your baby's health and well-being - it prevents them from overheating in hotter temperatures that they may not be used to.

Air Circulation

Stroller fans generate fresh air flow to your baby constantly, which is perfect if you are travelling in urban areas where polluted air may get to your baby.

Portable

Pram fans are portable and you can attach them to almost any pram, so if you have different pram options you can still use the same fan.

Safety

Attachable pram fans are completely safe for babies and are designed with every problem that could occur in mind.

Babies are curious - so the fan is designed with materials that will prevent your baby from being hurt by the moving fan. Stroller fans also come equipped with protective covers so that your baby's fingers don't get caught.

What Is Heat Exhaustion and What Are the Signs?

Heat exhaustion is when the body overheats due to exposure to high temperatures. When not attended to correctly, it can lead to life-threatening problems for your baby.

Although it may not be super common, it is something you should be aware of. Understanding what causes heat exhaustion and the signs of it can help you to prevent it and seek medical attention when necessary.

Studies have shown that younger children are unable to regulate their body temperature as well as adults. This means that overexposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration and heat exhaustion - which can both lead to heat stroke.

Whilst a pram fan alone won't prevent heat stroke, it is something you can use to prevent it alongside:

  • Keeping your baby inside in hot temperatures
  • Dressing them in light clothing
  • Keeping them hydrated (you can use ice lollies if you struggle to get your baby to drink water) Checking their temperature regularly

Some of the signs that your baby may be suffering from heat exhaustion include:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Pale, cool, and clammy skin
  • Fussing
  • Rapid breathing
  • Nausea
  • Decreased urination
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Dry mouth and lips
  • Lack of tears when crying

If your baby is experiencing any of these symptoms, you must seek medical attention. Remove any unnecessary items of clothing and attempt to cool them down with cold damp cloths and encourage them to hydrate.
