What Is a Stroller
A stroller is a type of travel device for babies and young toddlers. They are a type of pushchair, however, what makes a stroller different from a pushchair is their ability to become extremely compact, portable and easy to carry and manage.
Other types of pushchairs or buggies can be folded down, but strollers can be folded down extremely small and are capable of fitting into the smallest of car boots, or the tightest of spaces such as in the overhead lockers in the cabin of an aeroplane.
Strollers are for an older baby or toddler, from the starting age of 6 months old, up until around 3 or 4 years old. Strollers make the perfect travel companion for your family too. Our lightweight strollers are suitable for travelling, makes them a breeze when loaded onto any form of transport or when carrying up and down stairs.
What Is a Pram?
A pram is designed and suitable for newborn babies. This is because they are designed in a way that has the baby laid flat. Newborns have to be laid flat most of the time as this is how oxygen can best get to their lungs. Whilst babies develop at a rapid speed, being laid flat allows their lungs to grow and develop properly.
A baby's positioning in a pram will be parent-facing. This is useful for parents so you can keep an eye on their young baby and tend to their needs easily.
Some prams come with carrycots or can be converted into pushchairs. Here, you will see an influx in price as models get more advanced. Overall, a pram is the most popular method for carting a newborn baby around.
Stroller Vs Prams - What Is the Difference?
The main difference between a stroller and a pram is what age baby they are suitable for. A pram is for newborn babies and a stroller is for babies from the age of 6 months plus, until the age of around 3 or 4 years old.
There are some exceptions: some models can be adapted or swapped out for different parts to suit your baby at different ages, and other factors can include your baby’s size and how they develop. It is important to remember that every baby is different and can grow at a different rate.
Another big difference between a stroller and a pram is which way your baby will face. A pram features a parent-facing design for your little one, on the other hand, a stroller will seat your baby or toddler facing away from you. This allows them to take in their surroundings and view the world around them as you explore together, which is all very new and exciting at a baby’s age.
A pram generally cannot be folded down, so is less travel convenient than a stroller would be. A pram is built to be sturdy and rigid, capable of supporting very small babies when carting them from place to place and across potentially uneven terrain.
The great thing about having a stroller is that it is perfect for when your toddler begins to walk. It can be folded up and wheeled or carries with you whilst your little one toddles along. When they begin to get tired, simply reassemble your stroller at just a touch of a button and within seconds you have your fully resurrected functioning stroller again. This simple operation is perfect for when you are on the move or in busy, crowded spaces.
Do I Need a Stroller or a Pram?
The answer is both! You will need both a pram and a stroller when you have a baby. A pram is the first travel device you will need as it supports newborns and allows them to be laid flat. You will be ready to progress onto a stroller when your baby hits 6 months old. This time will fly by and so no time is too early to be looking at your next travel model for your baby.
A stroller is much more versatile. It will come in extremely useful when you begin to explore with your little one and go on adventures together as a family.
If you intend on taking the car, bus, train or plane to get to your destination when travelling with your baby then we advise you to invest in a stroller as soon as you get the chance.
It is also important to remember that you will need to bear in mind the pushing experience or your travel device. It is as much about you as a parent and the comfort of pushing as it is for your little one. Factors like your height will affect your decision-making when deciding on the right model for you. Failing to factor in the ‘driving experience’ of your stroller or pram and you could end up with a backache.
